I was still moved to tears on a number of occasions watching the movie in theaters as Les Mis has always caused me to do. You could almost see him asking himself, "how would a real person in this situation sing this line? Well, probably quietly to himself because otherwise it would be weird." No, that defeats the whole purpose of putting a musical on film. Sometimes they were trying so hard for authenticity that the actors, Jackman in particular, didn't seem to feel comfortable fully belting out the lyrics and instead settled on a modest whisper of them. I think it would have served them much better to let them pre-record their singing lines in a studio and have them lip synch them on set.
I did not like Jackman's style of singing as Valjean and I liked Crowe's Javert even less. Now, with that said, YES, the actual singing disappointed me greatly. The visuals and settings were often beautiful and breathtaking. They made Gavroche's death especially heartbreaking rather than making him just one of the many casualties, and Javert putting the medal on his body was a moment I will never forget. I liked that they got in a full on swordfight during the confrontation. I liked having the work song on a boat which showcased Valean's fabled strength. I thought the movie did a great job of making the world of Les Mis feel real and complete with the sets, I thought there were some very beautiful, dynamic ideas. So 10 hours, over and over and over, seems absurd. Usually the absolute best performance from someone is the first of the day. And after watching this video I understand why.
I'm not famous by any means whatsoever but I've been told even I can handle some roles better than they were handled in the movie. Now I understand that it had very little to do with casting. I can't imagine what it's like for tenor roles, which is VERY close to mezzo placement.
I'm a singer and my range and talent was soprano range (Cosette) when I was younger and now matches the mezzo range (Fantine, Eponine) and either way 10 hours of singing hurts, but what I've noticed is the mezzo range causes far longer lasting problems after long term use.
Even a clip of someone in the orchestra demanding a break while directors/producers brag about the long hours. I hadn't watched this until seeing this comment.
